Leash reactivity: why does my dog freak out on leash?

29 Oct 201829 Oct 2018
This is a topic I get a ton of questions about, particularly in my adult basics training classes. Why is my dog carrying on and putting on a huge display…

:: it’s been a minute! Aside from teaching classes and learning, learning, learning, all my spare dog time has been devoted to working on training @gildathegoldenretriever - and it’s paying off! Aside from being a true beauty, this lady is an awesome retriever, is loving and excelling at nosework, and just a generally lovely companion. Grateful for this magical creature in my life 😍 . . . #yyc #yycdogtrainers #clickertraining #goldenretriever #goldenretrieverpuppy #dogmodel #yycnow #dogtraining #positivereinforcement
:: some brilliant advice from one of my favourite vets: . . . #Repost @legacyveterinaryclinic with @get_repost ・・・ True or False: “Puppies shouldn’t go outside and meet other animals until they are completely vaccinated.” False: Puppy socialization is a sensitive developmental period during which puppies are most susceptible to learning what is normal in their environment. This age is anywhere between 3 and 12 weeks of age. If we follow vaccination rules, puppies wouldn’t meet other dogs until they were 16 to 18 weeks old, well beyond the sensitive period. Research shows there is no increased risk of contracting infectious diseases (ie. parvo virus) if a puppy is taken to classes before their full series of vaccines. Animals that are inappropriately socialized may grow up to be excessively fearful, sensitive, and potentially aggressive. With this being said, dog parks and highly infected areas should be avoided until the puppy has his or her full set of vaccinations. #legacyveterinaryclinic #heritagepointe #silveradoyyc#legacyvetclinic#legacylife#yyc#legacyyyc#waldenyyc#calgarydogs#yycdogsofinstagram #chaparralyyc #calgaryvets#lakechaparral #dogsofinstagram#positivetraining #forcefree #puppysocialization
:: even #dogtrainers’ dogs aren’t perfect. Especially when @gildathegoldenretriever learns to walk the x-pen around the room and try out new stuff. So now we are working on, um, #creativemanagement. 🤦🏻‍♀️ . . . #goldenretriever #puppy #goodthingshescute #calgarydogs #goldenretrieverpuppy #intraining #forcefree #dohouseplantskeepyouregular #sigh #yyc
:: the amazing @hyperhounds will be teaching these workshops at @kayennakennels and I for one cannot wait for Puppy Jumpers! Join me and @gildathegoldenretriever for that one, or attend another of your choosing - you won’t be disappointed. . . #agility #dogsports #puppy #kayennakennels #calgarydogs #calgarydogtraining #yycdogs #forcefree #dogsofinstagram #yyc #yycnow
:: @gildathegoldenretriever and #rufusdachsador both had lovely visits with our friends at @legacyveterinaryclinic today. #gildathegoldenretriever is growing like a weed, and Rufus is in pretty great shape for being sixteen! Gilda got a #boostershot and Rufus had a little bloodwork and some new medicine to help him with some #painmanagement and #anxiety. Both pups were good as gold. All those no-procedure #positivevetvisits pay off! If you haven’t done them, it’s never too late to start. Drop by, get a weight, deliver some treats and greet the staff (if they’re available), go home happy. It’s a great way to #setupforsuccess. 💜🐾 . . . #forcefree #positivedogtraining #happyvisits #nopainallgain #dogsofinstagram #puppiesofinstagram #clickertraining #nevertoolate #relationshipbuilding
:: happy, happy birthday to my first #heartdog, the dog who started it all. I adopted you on 9 August 2003 (15 years to the day before @gildathegoldenretriever would be born!), driving to #wichita to get you from the #wichitahumanesociety. You weren’t in the small dog kennels, so we walked through the large dog kennels and found you in the very last enclosure, looking sad. I didn’t even have to think twice. I’ll never forget looking into the backseat and thinking “My god, what is this poor dog thinking? We can’t talk to each other, and he’s now in my backseat.” Well, it took a lot of trial, error, and mistakes, but we learned to talk to each other. And even though you can’t hear me anymore, I know you know exactly what I’m saying. I love you, #rufusdachsador. You introduced me to a world I couldn’t have imagined, made me my best friends, and got me three jobs. Beyond that, when we brought #daintyleader home from the hospital you welcomed her happily and never looked back - and she adores you. Happy #16thbirthday - I hope we get to #celebrate even more together. 💚 . . . #rescuedog #dachshund #lab #mixedbreed #olddog #seniordog #rescuesofinstagram #dogsofinstagram #forcefree #clickertraining
