KATE PETERSON KOCH CPDT-KA is originally from St. Louis, Missouri (USA) and has trained dogs in a professional capacity since 2007. Her dog training interests include solid basic foundations for puppies and adults, behaviour modification for shy and fear-reactive dogs, and training assistance dogs. Kate apprenticed under trainers Kim Lutz CPDT-KA, CDBC and Tracy Buck CPDT-KA, KPA-CTP while working full time in the holistic pet industry as a manager, buyer, and training coordinator. Kate currently is a trainer at Kayenna Kennels, an evaluator and apprentice service dog trainer with Hope Heels, and a qualified list service dog evaluator for the province of Alberta.
Kate has also worked with various dog rescues and in grooming salons and dog daycares, introducing stress reduction, handling, and training protocols from multiple sides of the industry. Kate has taken seminars with Nicole Wilde, Dr. Susan Friedman, and Dr. Karen Overall amongst others, and is passionate about continuing education to stay current on force-free, science-based learning methods.
Kate has competed in earthdog, barn hunt, racing/coursing and rally obedience over the years with her personal dogs. Kate also founded and co-directed the Gateway Lo-Downs social Dachshund club in St. Louis, MO, where many friendships were made and endure to this day.
Kate currently has two rescued dogs: Maude and Stella, both 11 year old longhaired Dachshunds. Kate’s family welcomed a performance Golden Retriever puppy named Gilda from Kayenna Golden Retrievers in the fall of 2018, and Gilda is enjoying work in obedience training, scent detection, and conformation. Kate’s first heart dog, Rufus, passed away on 17 June 2019 at the ripe old age of 16.5, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Other things you might be interested in: Kate attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Webster University and holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Composition with a minor in Music Theory. She taught piano and classical voice full time for many years and can still be found playing piano or accordion sometimes. Kate also runs a strategic marketing business called ding dong ditch designs. Her lovely partner, Franklin, is a geophysicist, and their daughter Martha Clem likes science, art, dancing, and dogs.
